The ImageServer is a DICOM Compliant image server and archive.  The software is composed of a Windows service, often referred to as the ShredHostService (Server Threads Host Service) and a web GUI.  The web GUI contains an interface for configuring and administering the ImageServer software.  The ShredHostService implements the DICOM services and core functionality.

The ImageServer is a DICOM C-STORE Service Class User (SCU) and Service Class Provider (SCP).  It is also a DICOM C-FIND and C-MOVE SCP.  The ImageServer supports the storage and retrieval of a wide range of image and non-image objects.

The following section introduces some of the core concepts with how the ImageServer software is architected.
