The Server Rules configuration page is for configuring rules. Rules are set for each partition. Rules can be queried, added, edited or deleted from the page.

Adding or Editing Server Rules provides General and Rule configuration. On the General tab, a name for the rule must be entered, the type of rule selected, and an apply time for the rule. Each type of rule has different apply times associated with the type. Once a rule has been added, the type cannot be changed for the rule on subsequent edits. The apply time, however, can be changed when editing a rule. There are also three check boxes associated with a rule in the Add/Edit dialog. The Enabled checkbox can be used to temporarily disable or enable a rule. The Default checkbox sets if a rule is a default rule. A default rule does not have conditions associated with it. It is a rule that the actions are applied for when no other rules apply to a specific study being worked on. The Exempt checkbox is used to specify when a study is exempt from a rule (i.e., the rule type should not be applied to the study.) Exempt rules are used to prevent certain types of rules being applied to a study, for instance an exempt rule is created automatically to prevent already compressed studies from being compressed again.
The Rule XML tab of the dialog for adding and editing rules contains the XML text of the rule. When adding a new rule, the ImageServer supplies a number of template rules. These rules can be used as a basis for creating new rules. These templates were also generated to give a good example of the syntax for rules and demonstrating as many ways to construct rules as possible. When entering the Rule XML, there are also validation checks done against the XML data to ensure it is formatted correctly. A tool tip will be displayed over a warning icon when an error is found in the XML data.
