Overview

Authentication and authorization in the ClearCanvas RIS are controlled via users and authority groups respectively.

Individual users using the RIS Client must log in to the system using the login and password associated with their user account.  Each user account is assigned to one or more authority groups, which are groups of users with a common level of authority to act within the system.  Initially, the system automatically creates a default set of authority groups, including "Administrators", "Radiologists" and "Clerical," but these groups may be deleted or redefined as necessary.

Each authority group is associated with a set of authority tokens, each granting permission to perform a specific action within the system such as creating a report or adding a new patient to the system.  There is no direct association between users and authority tokens – authority tokens are granted to users indirectly via their authority group memberships.

Managing Authority Groups

All management of authority groups is performed in the Authority Groups administration screen, invoked by selecting Admin > Authority Groups from the main menu.  Please note that, as all administration is performed through the RIS Client, you will need to be logged in with a user account that is part of an authority group with administration authority tokens, such as "Administrators."

From this screen, you can add, remove, or rename authority groups, and modify which authority tokens are associated with each group. Double-click any of the existing authority groups to open the authority group editor, which allows for renaming the group and modifying the associated tokens. Note that the available authority tokens are defined by the individual application components and cannot be modified.
