Modality

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

A modality may refer to a specific device, or may refer more generically to a class of devices, e.g. "CT".

Properties

Property

Description

Id

A code that uniquely identifies the modality.

Name

The name of the modality. Must also be unique.

Notes

An institution may choose to define modalities at a high level, such as CT and MR, or more specifically in terms of individual devices, e.g. CT Scanner 1.  The choice depends on whether Procedure Types can be associated with a specific device, or only with a class of devices.  For example, a facility that has multiple CT scanners and has a Procedure Type called CT Chest would probably want to define a generic CT modality to associate with that procedure type.  On the other hand, if the facility always performs CT Chest on CT Scanner 1, then it might make sense to define a modality called CT Scanner 1 to associate with that procedure type.
