 Specifically, I get this mesage:

The installation of the runtime components of Visual C++ 2008 Libraries has failed. ...

As I do have the VS 2008 SP1 installed with all options, there ought to be some different explanation for this failure. My environment is Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit and I already installed the RIS 64 bit connected to SQL Server 2008, without a hitch.

While I plan to use the Workstation app on a different computer, I wanted to minimize the chance of running into problems while establishing the first client server contact.

Note: I am trying to install 64 bit version of the Workstation.

Any hints will be much appreciated as I do not see what can do to move forward .

Added few hours later: The same problem initially encountered on Windows Server 2008 R2 is replicated on Windows 7.

 Hi

Have had the same problem.  In viewing the install logs, it appears that SQL CE has trouble getting setup correctly.  Using Server 2008 R2 in 64 bit like you.  I have confirmed that SQL CE is updated yet still get the same error about c++.  I think the error may be incorrect as the logs say this has installed correctly.  Able to install and run the imageserver without error.

Awaiting hopefully a good answer and suggestion from a CC 'expert' on how to get past this.

Thoughts from someone out there ??

It seems that chacker is right: the error message is at best misguided - as the inspection of the installation log does not indicate any problems of the kind suggested by the error message.

The error being discussed here has indeed been confirmed as a defect, the installer reports incorrectly that a failure has occurred with runtime components of Visual C++ 2008 Libraries even when the issue is with the runtime components of SQL Compact Edition.  You can get updates on a fix by checking here: https://trac.clearcanvas.ca/source/ticket/6609

In the meantime, regardless of the error message that is displayed this error indicates that an error was returned when installing one of the components.  Our installer makes use of microsoft's redistributables and we log their progress to the log folder.  Look  for the following files: vcredistSP1_x86..log, vcredistSP1_x64.log, SQLCE_x86.log, or SQLCE_x64.log they might have more information about why the failure happens.
