The problem has been traced to incompatibility with IE9. Currently the only solution is to revert to a prior version of IE.

Thanks, that helped with my local client (on host).

However:

When I reinstalled and tried to log on remotely (had Verisign confirm the test SSL certifcate was insalled correctly) I get a different error when I launch the Workstations:
"The socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue. Local socket timeout was '00:00:59.8609920'".

The workstation log produced the following:
