Can anybody please tell me if a RIS system needs to be approved by the FDA? I understand the necessity for image viewers to pass FDA guidelines but have been completely unable to find anything regarding RIS systems.

I don't think they do. I'm not an expert but I think you just have to be HIPAA compliant with passwords etc.
