The service is running but when I try to launch the client, I see the "there's a problem, want to send a notice to Microsoft?" dialog.  The contents of the error report are:

EventType : clr20r3     P1 : clearcanvas.desktop.executable

P2 : 1.5.11250.33957     P3 : 4ab2e22d     P4 : system.drawing     P5 : 2.0.0.0

P6 : 4889dec2     P7 : 7af     P8 : 6c     P9 : system.argumentexception

Any ideas how to interpret that, or where to look for more info?  This machine was installed using the downloaded installer from ClearCanvas and doesn't have a debugger on it.
Thanks.

Hi, does the workstation start up at all, or does it die before you even get to the study browser? Can I ask a little more about your machine (e.g. Operating System, x64 or x86, etc)? Also, if there is anything in the workstation logs, can you post it as well?

Best regards,
Stewart

Stewart,

Sorry; I did forget the important details: Windows XP SP3, 32-bit.  And, as I say, it did run properly as recently as 6-8 weeks ago.  Not sure whether some update has been applied in the meanwhile, unfortunately...

The app dies with the dialog before presenting a single window.  The workstation log seems to have only the ShredHostService logs, nothing from the client application.  Does the client app log somewhere else?

Now that I think of it, I expect I could tweak Logging.config to get more verbose logging.  Do you have any suggestions for a "maximum debug" log file?

Thanks,

-Steve

Hi Steve,

There's a known issue where both the desktop client and service logs go into the same file (namely, the service's log file). There's no information lost, and the thread names still indicate the origin of each log event.

We should be able to get enough information from the one log file as it is without configuring the logging to be more verbose. If you do want to change the logging level though, just modify the logging.config file. By default, the Workstation logs all Info events and higher. There is only one lower level - Debug. The higher levels are Warn, Error and Fatal.

Hi Steve, that sure is a strange one - errors like that usually happen when the .NET runtime is starting up and it can't find a dependent assembly. I did a quick search for clr20r3, without a lot of luck. Here's what I suggest you try, but I'm kinda grasping at straws here, too.

1. Clear your event log - I found a post saying this fixed the problem for somebody - doubt it's that easy, but it's worth a try.
2. Try reinstalling the MSVC++ runtime versions that CC needs (just do a web search for "download visual studio 2005 C++ runtime"). I believe you need the SP1 version.
3. Try reinstalling the .NET Framework.
4. Try reinstalling CC.

Sorry I can't be of more help,
Stewart

Stewart: thanks for the straws! :-)

We'll try them in the next few days and report back.

Hi,

I wanted to report back that the problem apparently was due to a corrupt User.config file.  I got the clue from yesterday's post: http://www.clearcanvas.ca/dnn/tabid...fault.aspx.  We removed all the config files in "Local Settings\Application Data\ClearCanvas_Inc" (how come there are so many??) and now CC runs.  (Now it is CC 2.0SP1).

Thanks for the suggestions and especially thanks to Wes for his post!

-Steve
